The future of Belmar Park’s bird sanctuary is uncertain due to a proposed 800,000+ square foot apartment building on the park’s boundary.

Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation will happen!
They are the top causes of bird declines!
Negative impacts include major building demolition, construction, permanent and dense human habitation directly abutting the park’s eastern boundary as shown in video at bottom of page.
The developer’s large trees also will be cut down which will shrink and fragment the park’s overall habitat.

Scientists recommend keeping at least 60 meters away from the nests of large birds such as raptors.
Requiring a buffer zone to protect the park would reduce the risks to birds and save some of the large trees!
Please ask the city to use Eminent Domain to establish that buffer zone.

Building footprint is over TWO football fields.
Total building square footage over 800,000 square feet exceeds 13 Football Fields!
Plus another one planned across the street up to 12 stories!
Over 227 rental units per acre for 12 stories!
Noise from demolition and construction over a period of years may scare off birds and wildlife .
Human occupation and related activity will degrade Belmar Park’s wildlife and avian habitat quality.
Bird migration patterns could be disrupted which can reduce survival.
Depending on habitat degradation, protected migratory bird populations at Belmar Park may decline.
69 large trees listed for removal which will decimate the collective tree canopy habitat.
